Nicole Wins Gold

icole competed in Missoula last weekend. She has only one more competition left this year - the state meet in two weeks. This weekend was exciting for her as she came home with 8 golds and 1 bronze. She is a level 7 competitor and moves on to the 8th level after state.

She won first place on the bars, the beam, the floor routine, the vault, and overall for level 7. Then she placed first overall for all levels on three of the routines and 3rd overall on another.

Every meet is different and the group of girls performing vary. This was a nice shot in the arm as state meet will have more competition next week. Have fun Nicole!

Kendal's 31st Birthday

endal turns 31 and here we sit without a camera - only a cell phone! Well, a little distortion doesn't diminish the birthday or years.
In a few more days Kendal and Lynsey will be celebrating their 5th Anniversary! Now, I think these years are going way too fast.

olden belongs to Nicoli and Scott. I got to drive into Beaverton and have a short visit with them and Grammy Lois. They are getting settled into a nice, quiet community. When I go shopping from Vernonia, I am not far them!

Holden is already running the household and letting Mommy and Daddy know they are no longer in control of things.

essa and Nicole represented the Level 7 team for Avant Coeur, their gym in Coeur d'Alene. The competition was called 'Battle in Seattle', sponsored by Harley-Davidson.

All the gymnasts wore glasses which had flashing lights all around each frame. They did the grand march in the dark so all you saw was flashing lights. It was pretty and fun. Then the over-head lights came on and each team was introduced.

Addicted to Quilting

She learned to quilt on MONDAY.

Her stitches all were fine.

She forgot to make us dinner

So we all went out to dine.

She quilted miniatures on TUESDAY.

She says they are a must -

They really were quite lovely

But she forgot to dust.

On WEDNESDAY it was a sampler.

She says stippling's fun -

What highlights, what shadows!

But the LAUNDRY wasn't done.

Nine Patches were on THURSDAY;

Green, yellow, blue and red.

I guess she really was engrossed -

She never made the Bed.

It was wall hangings on FRIDAY

In colors she adores.

It never bothered her at all

That crumbs were on the floor.

I found a maid on SATURDAY.
My week is now complete.

My wife can quilt the hours away;

The house will still be neat.

In competitions, last night in Spokane, grand-daughter Nicole takes first place overall. I am amazed that she doesn't hit her head before getting her feet back under herself. Obviously, she is moving very fast and is not in this position very long.

I went really simple this year. The above card used silver card stock for the silver border and snowflake, which was made with a die-cut press. Silver ribbon finishes the theme.

This is really unusual for me - funky green! Mary and Baby Jesus are embossed with white embossing power.

Downtown is only a few blocks long. Most stores are a little eclectic, unique, antique, or contain the bare necessities. The roof of city hall is under the "C" in the word City. The FEMA trailers were used to house people after the flood. Two years later some are still there because they do not have a home livable.

Looking a little further and a little more east, you catch a glimpse of the sewer lagoons. These are very efficient; water coming out of them is purer than the water in the near river. The ecology folks hate them because it is the cheapest form of sewer treatment. Government likes to spend your money and they have gone 'over the edge' with sewer treatment ideas. Bob is willing to fight this battle and it looks like he is winning. He has a letter in is briefcase that may save the city 4 million dollars. Tonight is a big night for that meeting.

Our rental home is tucked into the trees that wind along the river - I guess if you reach the "O" you have gone a little too far. The Mill pond (you can see a speck of it through the trees while on our deck) is within walking distance. The distance around the mill pond is 1 mile so it is an easy ride or walk around the pond.

It is called a mill pond because it is a man made lake to put logs into for the lumber mill, which is no longer functioning.

The hike to the taller peek (total elevation of 3288 feet) is a 6 mile round trip challenging hike. Elevation gain is 1603 feet and leads to a 360 degree view to the Pacific Ocean, Cascade Mountain peaks such as Mount Hood, and other peaks in the Coast Range. On this rare, clear day, Bob saw Mount St. Helen as well. The lower peak (elevation 3200 feet) to the east and south does not have trail access.

The trail is steep at times along rock outcroppings, but does offer views that include wildflowers in bloom in the springtime. Saddle Mountain is located seven miles off U.S. Route 26 about 65 miles west of Portland, Oregon. The access road to the mountain and state park is paved. The area contains dense forests of spruce and hemlock, and some ancient lava flows.
